Hey hey everyone!
We’re down to the last two weeks of True Blood; it’s been too fast!
Without giving away too much here, let’s just say the two episodes tonight will show you a truly dark and gory side of the vampire community. Faint-hearted viewers, be careful!
In keeping with the predominantly vampire side of the show, we’ve compiled 10 facts that you may or may not have known about vampires. Hopefully they keep you entertained while watching True Blood tonight!
1. Vampires were usually reported as bloated in appearance, and ruddy, purplish, or dark in colour, completely unlike the handsome faces of Bill Compton and Eric Northman!
2. Items able to ward off vampires (like garlic, sacred items or holy water) are called apotropaics. Be sure to keep some cloves of garlic handy if you ever find yourself crossing a deserted graveyard
3. Staking is the most commonly cited method of destroying suspected vampires, and killing walking vampires too! This is believed to work by “deflating” a bloated corpse before it turns into a vampire.
*psst* SPOILER ALERT –
You will see this happen tonight on True Blood! Who’s dying? I’m not telling!
4. Decapitation is another preferred method in Germany and Slavic areas. That must not be fun, even for a vampire.
5. The modern belief in vampires is not just in Western culture (Count Dracula). It is also present in Asia, for example in Malaysia (pontianaks) and Chinese (jiang shi) folklore.
6. Animals can also turn into vampires, the most commonly known creature being the hellhound. These ferocious dogs are extremely loyal creatures that guard graveyards while their vampire masters sleep, so if you ever want to stake a vampire, make sure you’re equipped to fight these dogs!
7. The prevalence of vampires in modern culture can be attributed to the most influential vampire novel of all time: Dracula by Bram Stoker. This was written a LONG time ago, in 1897! Truly legendary literature there.
8. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is also the source of the myth about vampires turning into bats.
9. In film, vampires became most accessible to the general vampire-fearing public via the 1931 film Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi in his career-making role. Lugosi is now synonymous with vampires in film, even more so than Tom Cruise as Lestat.
10. A 1992 remake of Bram Stoker’s Dracula starring Gary Oldman in the blood-sucking lead role was very well-received. In fact, this became one of the highest grossing vampire films and paved the way for more like the movie adaptation of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire in 1994.
There are many other vampire facts that we can share but for now we’ll just limit ourselves to 10.
Don’t forget to catch True Blood tonight at 9pm (SIN) on MAX! Fangs everyone!
